Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Preparing young children for a lifetime of learning and strengthening the parent-child relationship.

Holy Family believes that parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. Unfortunately, many parents face  obstacles to educational success for their children.  Perhaps a single parent struggles to keep food on the table and does not know how to use what little time she has with her children to teach them the skills they need to start school. Or adults in the household have struggled academically and could not finish school themselves.

The Parent-Child Home Program® is an evidence-based early childhood literacy, parenting and school readiness program for families who face these types of obstacles. The program prepares young children for school by increasing language and literacy skills, enhancing social-emotional development, and strengthening the parent-child relationship.

In twice-weekly 30-minute home visits, a trained Home Visitor models play, verbal interaction and reading activities for the parents. These activities create a language-rich home environment and promote positive parenting skills. The complete program is offered over two years.

For 45 years, the Parent-Child Home Program® has been working with underprivileged families to bridge the achievement gap. Research has proven that the participants in the program are more likely to have increased parent-child interaction and be ready to enter school and succeed academically. They are less likely to require special education services and are over 30% more likely to graduate from high school than their non-program peers.

HFI currently offers the Parent-Child Home Program® to low-income families within Allegheny County who have a child or children between 16 months and 3 years of age.
